April is from Ohio, but when eight of her sorority sisters decided to move to Atlanta after college, she hitched a ride. She eventually applied for a job in the emerging staffing business. “We were still selling the idea of temporary staffing back then.” A lot of companies didn’t know what it was. “I loved it. This turned out to be my thing.” The 50-year-old is now the CEO of firstPRO Staffing, one of the top female-run businesses in Atlanta. “When I bought this company in 1986, we had five employees.” She now has 125. A year into ownership, April fell in love with her business partner Phillip. They have raised five kids ranging in age from ten to thirty. Today, a new generation of family is poised to take over the business. “My kids knew that mommy worked. I think that was good for them to be around. It was like pre-pre business school.
